Is the DSLR Still Worth It in a Mirrorless world?

August 20th, 2026

Mirrorless cameras have quickly become the new standard in photography, but does that mean the traditional DSLR has had its day? After a recent food photography session, I’d argue there’s still plenty of life left in these cameras.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph Gastro Grind Burgers in Palm Desert, California, capturing some of their fresh burgers and menu offerings. For this shoot, I brought along one of my go-to workhorses, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, with a Canon EOS 90D serving as my backup.

For glass, one of the lenses I reached for was something considerably smaller…

AKA… THE PANCAKE LENS.

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM, affectionately known as a pancake lens because of its incredibly compact profile, might not look particularly intimidating attached to a full-size DSLR. But don’t let its size fool you.

For food photography, I found that little 40mm gave me a great perspective for capturing the textures, colors, and details that make a dish come alive in a photograph. Paired with the 5D Mark IV, the results spoke for themselves.

And honestly? Wow.

The images came out beautifully.y smaller…

Old Doesn’t Mean Obsolete

There’s no denying that mirrorless cameras have become the direction of the industry. They’re smaller, packed with newer technology, and offer some incredible capabilities.

But newer doesn’t automatically make everything that came before it obsolete.

Professional DSLRs like the 5D Mark IV are still extremely capable cameras. They continue to produce beautiful, high-quality images and remain useful tools for photographers who know how to get the most out of them.

At the end of the day, photography isn’t determined by whether there’s a mirror inside your camera.

It’s what you create with it.

Below are a few of my favorite images from the Gastro Grind Burgers shoot, captured right here in Palm Desert.

So take a look, enjoy the details, and maybe don’t browse these on an empty stomach. 🍔📸

Bon appétit.
